The University of Southern Mississippi's Construction Engineering Technology has one hundred and seventy undergraduate and twenty-five graduate students.  This semester (spring of 2006) we used WebTrain Video Conferencing to create a "virtual" classroom to teach our Construction Organization class.  We combined two normal "bricks-and-mortar" classes into one "virtual" classroom.  The Hattiesburg class had thirty-one students and the Gulfport class had five students.  During the semester, the class was "broadcast" from the Hattiesburg and then Gulfport on alternating weeks.
My reactions to teaching in virtual classroom;

  • This teaching approach was a very good way to reach the students in this post-Katrina world of south Mississippi.  Students were logged into this real time class from remote locations all the way from Jackson to the coast of Mississippi (a one hundred and sixty mile distance).  Since the majority of our students drive to rather than live on campus, this money and time saving technique was very popular with the majority of our students.
  • The measured outcomes of the students on exams were as good or better in the "virtual" classroom than in "bricks-and-mortar" classroom.  The exact same exam was given two semesters in a row, with the "virtual" class scoring an average of four points higher than the "bricks-and-mortar" class.
  • The technical support of the WebTrain Video Conferencing organization was exceptional.  Not only were all the students able to logon with minimal problems, but when there were technical glitches, they were solved immediately.
As a faculty using "WebTrain Video Conferencing" to create a "virtual" classroom, I was very pleased with the results.  The process went much smoother than I anticipated and I never expected the student outcomes of the "virtual" class to exceed that of the "bricks and mortar" class.

Poverty is not about weakness.  For the 800 million people who go hungry each day and the one billion who lack access to clean water, poverty is an absence of opportunity.
Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is responding to this urgent need, helping people in developing communities gain access to technologies that will improve their lives.  EWB believes that technology, when appropriately incorporated into each community's social, cultural, economic and political context, can drive extraordinary change.
"Communicator™ has been chosen has the web conferencing and collaboration solution to facilitate communications between its headquarters and overseas volunteers who are implementing technologies in third world countries.  One such volunteer in West Africa happened to be testing their VoIP settings in the complimentary WebTrain Pre-Meeting or Demo System Check room last week - the sound quality was crystal clear half way around the globe.  Not only does Communicator™ assist in connecting EWB's worldwide members on an application sharing level, but it also greatly reduces costly teleconference bills."

The Association of BC Forest Professionals is responsible for registering and regulating British Columbia's professional foresters and forest technologists.  Today, the Association of B.C. Forestry Professionals is the largest professional forestry association in Canada and the first to include forest technologists.
With so many members in every corner of British Columbia, they needed a web conferencing solution to unite their members. Following a comprehensive review of today's collaboration solutions, the Association decided to implement the Communicator™ collaboration suite of solutions.  Dwight Yochim RPF, the association's manager of professional development commented "We had close to 70 people on the Webinar.  We were nervous for obvious reasons, the first being that this was the first time we had done this ourselves.  We found the software very easy to learn.  We found the set up very easy to do.  This was a full seven hours of transmission.  The session went extremely well from our perspective".  And what did the meeting participants have to say?
"Just a quick reply on the Webinar from Prince George.  I thought it was a great way to attend this meeting.  It was a great time saver.  To attend this course in person would have cost me an extra day of travel.

The WebTrain service provider is simple to work with."

"It was a worthwhile show - better than a trip to Prince George.

Overall a great tool, and what a saving in cost and time!  Good work and look forward to its use in the future."

Because of the great success of this meeting, the Association of B.C. Forestry Professionals will be using Communicator™ as their premier web conferencing service solution.
